BaRo

BaRo is the Shipping Mark used by the family owned German Beech sawmill Sagewerk Bachmann GmbH and the family Rogers, owners of Trunkstyle Ltd. These 2 companies have been working very closely together for over 22 years. Working together as a close-knit team, BaRo supplies German Beech, mainly to Importers and merchants in the in the UK but also to other customers around the world.

Sources of Logs:

Mainly local forests, various forest owners. The logs are obtained from a number of forest areas. In some cases the forest areas are owned by the German Government, in others by the Church or by commercial business. In all cases the forest owners have to adhere to the strict German Laws relating to Forestry.

Bachmann Sawmill Certification:

                       PEFC Ref:   CoC 04-32-0005.

                       FSC Ref:     CoC SGS-COC-004765.

Equipment:

Over recent years the sawmill has kept up to date with demand by investing in modern equipment and facilities. Debarking machine, forklifts, vacuum lifts, steamer, kilns storage sheds, edging line producing parallel edged planking after kilning, a sawdust/wood waste burning boiler which supplies the necessary heat for the kilns and steamer, and also provided heating for the workers inside the sawmill.

New equipment for the production of cut to size parts.was installed during the Winter 08/09. For many customers this has been a useful addition because many companies want to be able to cost accurately the material entering the production line.

The sawmill has a number of its own lorries to load, collect and transport logs from the forest to the log-yard. The logs are normally cut into the lengths required for planking in the forest, prior to loading on the lorries. In common parlance, the log lengths may be “door lengths - 2.3-3.0 M” or “longs - up to 4.5 M”

Most of the sawmill has a solid surface. This allows a number of modern forklifts to travel around without being bogged down in mud.

Production:

Steamed and Unsteamed, Edged and Unedged planking, as well as Unsteamed and some Steamed beech squares. Shortly before the logs are cut into planking, most logs are de-barked. This makes for easier handling and better presentation, and also helps to contain the bark in one place. This bark is used in a biomass boiler which reduces significantly the dependence on heating oil.

To cut the logs, the sawmill has a bandsaw for cutting the larger logs, and also a framesaw that although much older, is also very reliable.

After cutting, the planking is either prepared for steaming in the modern steamer or sticked for air drying in the yard. Once sufficiently air-dried, the planking can be kilned in one of the 7 kilns.

After kilning, some planking is put through the modern parallel edging line. This line is fitted with equipment to measure and mark each edged board with the length and width measurement.

As well as producing planking and cut to size parts, squares (turning blanks), are also cut, mainly in the following thicknesses, 32/38/51/63mm. Popular lengths for squares are in the range 610-910mm although shorter and longer are produced as well.

In the yard there are several large sheds for storage of the de-sticked and kiln dried material. Recently, a climate controlled shed was built for material kilned to low M/C. Additionally another large shed allows much of the stock that is air-drying to be undercover as well.

Market areas:

As well as producing for the European Market, Team BaRo can supply to customers around the world. For the North American market, and those markets that prefer it,  Bachmann grades to NHLA rules of standard inspection and produces a variety of standard grades of steamed European Beech lumber to the standard expected and required. Thicknesses include 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4 in a variety of fixed standard board foot measure, lengths and low moisture content. For worldwide markets take a look at the BaRo website at http://www.baroholz.com

Shipment:

By trailer direct to the UK, or by container to other destinations around the world. Deliveries to the UK are on a through trailer delivery basis, direct from the sawmill to the importers yard usually as a full load. Significant quantity part loads can be arranged providing there is another customer located nearby that also requires a part load at the same time.

The supply is often on a planned forward contract basis, in order for a customer to get the goods he wants when he wants them. But stocks held at the sawmill often allow prompt availability for shipment at short notice.

In addition, Team BaRo can supply to customers around the world. However, when supplying to customers worldwide there is the possibility of misunderstanding the qualities that are available. Therefore it is desirable to arrange for a visit to the sawmill, to establish what is expected by each party.
